PBIS at Natoma Station:

Daily positive and productive interactions between parents, teachers, staff, and students help create a positive school culture and climate at Natoma Station Elementary. Treating each other with respect, kindness, and understanding are the foundations to each day. Natoma Station is a PBIS school. What does this mean? We provide effective instruction for all students in social-emotional learning, early intervention, and a multi-tiered model of instruction and intervention. Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is based on a problem-solving model and aims to prevent inappropriate behavior through teaching and reinforcing appropriate behaviors. Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is a process that is consistent with the core principles of MTSS (Multi-tiered System of Support). PBIS offers a range of interventions that are systematically applied to students based on their demonstrated level of need. Both MTSS and PBIS are grounded in differentiated instruction. Each approach puts systems in place at the universal – all students (Tier 1), targeted group – some students (Tier 2), and intensive – few Students (Tier 3) levels.

Tier I – All Students

• All Students receive instruction in social emotional learning through our Second Step district adopted classroom curriculum. This curriculum is designed to address topics such as Skills for Learning, Empathy, Emotional Management, and Problem Solving. This evidence-based curriculum gives students the language and skills to be able to interact with adults and peers in positive ways.
• We explicitly teach and model classroom and school rules and expectations for all students. We also clearly explain the consequences when rules and expectations are not followed (Progressive Discipline).
• We use Cheetah Champs to recognize students who make good choices.
• We explicitly teach one Character Counts Pillar every week to all students.
• Our Character Counts Trimester assemblies recognize students who exemplify the traits of two of our Character Counts Pillars.

Tier II – Some Students

• Special Friends – Small group support using the Second Step curriculum in a more targeted way to meet the needs of students. One-on-one support to meet student needs.
• Social worker intern provides small group interventions. Girls Circles, Lunch Bunch, Recess Playgroup are some of the interventions that have been used.

Tier III – Few Students

• Check-in Check-out individual support. Students check in daily with a staff mentor who supports them in setting and meeting individualized goals.
• Individualized behavior plan/contract. Individualized behavior plan that provides support and accountability for students who need additional support.
